We’ve heard a LOT about ‘growth mindset’s over the last few years. It’s become a buzzword that people use to encompass a whole bunch of stuff, from positivity, to lifelong learning, having an open mind and being prepared to take on challenges. These may all be things that a growth mindset may help you with, but let’s get a little more specific.
Does it help your studying and exam performance?
Simple answer? YES, absolutely!
My ACCA, CPA and CA students generally feel that more accounting lectures will solve all their problems, especially as they get to higher levels in their qualification journey. They also feel they don’t have time for anything else. So they have the same question when I tell them that their mindset will DIRECTLY affect their academic success:
“Ok Yvonne… but HOW?!”
Take a look at some ways that a growth mindset impacts your studies...
Take-aways:
Here are some practical impacts if you DON’T have a growth mindset (ie: You have a fixed mindset)
- Our response to not doing well impacts out FUTURE study approach. EVERY study session
- We'll try avoid questions that we're not SURE we're going to pass... so we study more theory
- We worry about what people think of us, so we may not ask for help
- We worry about what it MEANS if we're not doing well... "Perhaps I'm not smart enough for this
There’s lots more to this conversation, but for this article, I want you to realise that your mindset will affect the practical choices you make about HOW you study, whether you ask for help, may impact whether or not you give up, and because of all these things… your mindset will DIRECTLY affect your studies and exam performance
